The condition is pretty rare and impacts only 1% of men. Yet it causes between 10% and 15% of infertility cases (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK578191\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sharma &amp; Leslie, StatPearls, 2023<\/a>). So what exactly is it, and what can you do if it affects you? We&#8217;ve broken it all down here. Generally speaking, azoospermia refers to cases where men have no sperm cells in their semen.<br \/>\nA quick biology lesson pit stop. Your testicles make sperm. When you ejaculate, that sperm travels through your reproductive tract and mixes with fluid in your seminal ducts to make semen. With azoospermia there are no sperm cells. So whilst your semen might look normal, it isn&#8217;t going to help you make a baby.<\/p>\n<h2>Types of azoospermia<\/h2>\n<p>There are actually three different types of azoospermia. They break down into non-obstructive and obstructive.<br \/>\nThe two non-obstructive types are pre-testicular azoospermia and testicular azoospermia. Pre-testicular azoospermia happens when the hormones responsible for creating sperm aren\u2019t working as they should. Testicular azoospermia comes from issues with the function or structure of the testicles.<br \/>\nThen there\u2019s post-testicular azoospermia, known as \u2018obstructive\u2019. Problems with ejaculation cause it, usually down to an obstruction of some sort in the reproductive tract.<\/p>\n<h2>Causes of azoospermia<\/h2>\n<p>Different types of azoospermia have different root causes.<\/p>\n<h3>Pre-testicular Azoospermia<\/h3>\n<p>This type of azoospermia is all about your hormones. Genetic disorders are a common cause. Take Klinefelter syndrome, where the body has an extra X chromosome. It can affect testosterone production and other parts of the reproductive system. Kallmann syndrome is another example. It affects the body\u2019s ability to produce gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which can hit sperm production. Damage to the brain may also trigger this type, specifically to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland (<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15441-azoospermia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3>Testicular azoospermia<\/h3>\n<p>This one comes down to issues with the testicles themselves. Again, Klinefelter syndrome can be the culprit. Other symptoms of the condition include absent testicles or testicles that haven\u2019t dropped. You might also find issues with your testicular function if you had mumps, or if you had surgery or radiation therapy for cancer. Varicoceles can cause this type too. This is a condition where the veins in the testicles are swollen or tangled. You can read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exseedhealth.com\/varicocele-your-go-to-guide\/\">varicoceles here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Post-testicular azoospermia<\/h3>\n<p>This is actually the most common kind, present in around 40% of azoospermia cases (<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15441-azoospermia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>). It basically means a blockage or missed connection with the tubes involved in semen production. A previous injury or cysts can cause it. So can a vasectomy (although that\u2019s kind of the point of them!)<br \/>\nYou can also have genetic conditions that stop the tubes in your reproductive system developing properly. For example, congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) is a genetic condition. The vas deferens ducts that carry sperm from the testes are missing (<a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/condition\/congenital-bilateral-absence-of-the-vas-deferens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MedlinePlus Genetics, NIH<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>How do I know if I have azoospermia?<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s the interesting thing about azoospermia. For a condition with such a big impact on your life, there are often no symptoms. Many guys don\u2019t find out they have it until they try &#8211; and sadly fail &#8211; to conceive.<br \/>\nThe best way to find out is to get your sperm tested before trying to conceive. A <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.exseedhealth.com\/collections\/sperm-concentration-test-kit\"><strong>sperm concentration test<\/strong><\/a> measures how many sperm cells are present in your semen. Hormone problems might show up as a low sex drive or erectile dysfunction. A blockage might leave your testicles swollen and uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<h2>Can I have kids if I have azoospermia?<\/h2>\n<p>Having no sperm is obviously a hurdle to starting a family, but it\u2019s not impossible. Guys with a low sperm count can often improve things with diet and lifestyle changes. Azoospermia, though, usually needs a bit more medical intervention.<br \/>\nSurgery can sometimes fix a blockage. Hormonal treatments might help if you struggle to produce sperm. There is also a procedure called micro-TESE, where a small needle goes into the testicles and extracts sperm. Doctors can then use that sperm in assisted fertility treatments like IVF or ICSI (<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15441-azoospermia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>). This works well for many men with non-obstructive azoospermia, though in some cases no viable sperm turns up.<br \/>\nRemember, even if azoospermia stops you having biological children, you can still become a father. Many men with azoospermia turn to donor sperm to build their families.
